Funkhaus

Welcome to the café in the WDR Funkhaus!

Like its location in the heart of Cologne, the Funkhaus – the WDR broadcasting centre – is colourful and diverse. Standing virtually next door to Cologne Cathedral, it enables visitors to start the day with a substantial breakfast. At midday, the Funkhaus – Café, Bar, Restaurant invites people in for lunch, with a choice of light salads, soups, and small dishes – including options to suit vegetarians. For lovers of cakes and confectionery, a selection of gateaux and pastries and a variety of coffee house classics in barista quality will meet every taste.

And in the evening, the Funkhaus transforms itself into a modern bar that can satisfy any wish.

At the heart of this attractive boulevard café are the consistently friendly and courteous personnel, who in summertime also serve food and beverages on the spacious outdoor terrace. Though when the weather allows, a comfortable seat outside with a view of the Cathedral’s spires is a joy and pleasure at any time of day.

Light dishes, served right in the heart of the Cathedral City

If you love good food, these dishes will make your mouth water: Whether freshly ground beef tartare or salmon fillet on fresh ravioli with pea-mint pesto, sous vide veal chop, corn-fed chicken breast or our vegan chickpea curry.

The dishes in the Funkhaus Cologne will tempt anyone by their delicious variety. In the historic WDR-Funkhaus, guests can choose between soups and salads, as well as meat and vegetarian dishes.

With the “Mouse” and the “Elephant”, our youngest guests also have their own choice of dishes. Our dessert classics – cold rice pudding and chocolate soufflé add the crowning touch to any meal.

Bar

Another outstanding feature of the Funkhaus Cologne is its fantastic bar

The great bar in the WDR-Funkhaus on Wallrafplatz with its back-lit design is a genuine highlight. Whether you are looking for a cocktail bar for an outing with friends, a stylish venue to enjoy a glass of wine, or a place to go for one last nightcap, there is no wish for a drink the Funkhaus cannot fulfil.

As well as freshly mixed cocktails and delicious Kölsch beer from the barrel, our bar team can also offer a changing choice of top-quality wines. The ceiling-high shelves behind the bar are filled with all manner of premium spirits, and for gin lovers, the Funkhaus can present a breathtaking variety of unusual gins.

Musicians of the WDR Symphony Orchestra are regular visitors to the Funkhaus. “Classic with Kölsch – The Music Talk“ is an event that offers the opportunity to talk about classical music, and sometimes becomes a venue for the one or other live performance.

History

A place in the history of West German Radio

The Funkhaus am Wallrafplatz was erected between 1948 and 1952 on the ruins of the bombed-out Hotel Monopol. The construction of the new broadcasting centre, in the immediate vicinity of the Cathedral, was one of the major and most important architectural projects of the early post-war period in Cologne city centre, 90% of which was destroyed during the 2nd World War.

Inaugurated with an official ceremony on 21 June 1952, it was able to boast being the most modern broadcasting house in Europe. The “grosse Sendesaal” - the great broadcasting hall - was celebrated as an acoustic sensation. It is one of the most important venues for festive music occasions and is still viewed today as an architectural masterpiece.

In its décor, the Funkhaus – Cafe, Bar, Restaurant takes its inspiration from the style of the 1950s – just like the former Tea Room, which was also a highly popular meeting place in its day. High windows and the back-lit bar give the room its character. Photos of and from the WDR-Funkhaus of the 1950 are a reminder to visitors today of how things were at that time.
